A while back, Trends & Tribulations started the ABC’s of beauty to help educate readers on the many weird, bizarre, and overall unknown ingredients and products on the market. We continue on this segment with the letter B.

BB CREAM

Essentially a supercharged foundation, this tinted “beauty balm” blends moisturizer, sunscreen, primer and foundation into a do-it-all complexion product.

BENZOYL PEROXIDE

Benzoyl Peroxide is a bacteria-fighting ingredient found in skincare products to treat acne. It’s made in the scientific laboratory by treating hydrogen peroxide with benzoyl chloride. It is usually found in 2.5 to 10 percent concentrations in acne treatment products.

BETA HYDROXY ACID (BHA)

Paula’s Choice BHA Spot Treatment, $43 for 0.3 oz., via Paula’s Choice

BHA is a oil-soluble substance that works by exfoliating deep into pores to make room for regeneration of new skin. It is generally less irritating than alpha hydroxy acid. It works best for acne prone skin, since it is soluble in oil, vs. its counterpart, Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA), which is water-soluble. It can make skin sensitive, so be sure to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen when using it (keep scrolling for more info).

BLACK TEA

Fresh Black Tea Age-Delay Traditions kit, $98, via Sephora

A tea containing vitamins, (B2, C, E), minerals (magnesium, potassium, zinc), polyphenols and tannins. vitamins (B2, C, E), minerals (magnesium, potassium, zinc), some essential oils, polyphenols and tannins. Polyphenols are natural antioxidants that neutralize free radicals. Tannins protect our bodies and skin from environmental stressors, such as pollution and UV radiation and are known to fight bacteria.

BIOTIN

Vibrance Biotin & MSM Capsules for Long Hair, $29.99, via Amazon

Part of the B complex vitamin, also known as vitamin H, it aids in cell growth and production of fatty acids, promoting healthy hair, skin and nails. It is found in products, but can also be taken in pill form.

BOTANICAL

Botanical means plant-derived ingredients in skincare products, haircare and cosmetics. The types of plants they originate from include herbs, roots, flowers, fruits, leaves or seeds. They are most notable for their anti-inflammatory properties, which can benefit sensitive skin with rashes, breakouts, sunburn, eczema, redness, and uneven texture. They are also beneficial to use post-procedure, whether that is a chemical peel, laser, or anything else.

BRIGHTENING

“Brightening” is a term for products that reduce skin redness and uneven pigmentation, typically using ingredients like salicylic or kojic acid.

BROAD-SPECTRUM SUNSCREEN

Product that protects against the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. The SPF number essentially measures how much a sunscreen protects you from sunburn, which is caused solely by UVB rays. UVA is a longer wavelength of sunlight & it consists of 95% of all ultraviolet radiation reaching the earth. Therefore, a broad-spectrum sunscreen is an extremely important product to have to protect your skin from wrinkles and sun spots.

Beauty Review: Valentia Beauty Eye Cream & Hydration Mask

Valentia recently reached out to me to try out a few of their products – their True Glow Eye Cream, the Ultra Plumping Hydration Mask, & their Royal Rose Hydrating Serum. I happily obliged, as I’m sure you all know I am a total product junkie and LOVE trying new stuff. Plus, their beauty products are made in a cruelty-free beauty lab owned and operated by women in the USA. Their products are made using sustainable energy, are vegan-friendly, and use 98% natural ingredients.

First off, the skinny on the True Glow Eye Cream.

Valentia True Glow Eye Cream, $25

It contains the following:

Astaxanthin: The reigning King of the antioxidants – please take a bow – this little guy has 600 times more antioxidant power than Vitamin C, increases skin moisture, smoothes fine lines , and restores elasticity to the skin.

Resistem: or “Natures Miracles” as we like to call them. These plant stem cells work to repair damaged skin cells and protect the skin from stress related aging, leaving skin refreshed and renewed!

Vitamin C: This standout vitamin helps treat multiple skin care and really brightens the under eye are. Your under eye area will feel firmer and look brighter.

Organic Rosehip Oil: Dry and flaky under eyes be gone! Rosehip oil amps up skins moisture content, delivering deep nourishment and reducing the appearance of fine lines that can creep in when we’re a bit dry under the eye.

Arnica: This botanical herb has been widely used in homeopathic medicine for bruising and soreness which is why we chose it for our True Glow Eye Cream. It stimulates white blood cells to relieve dark circles and puffiness.

After using this product for about 5 weeks, there were noticeable results in my under eye area. I received numerous compliments about how fresh faced I looked (even on those days where I tossed and turned for hours the night before). Fine lines and dark circles were noticeably diminished, and my under eye area truly looked plumper.

A look at the ingredients:

– Rose Damascena: One of the most nourishing and skin friendly natural oils, providing balance, moisture, and a variety of vitamins and minerals to the skin.

– Niacinamide (Vitamin B): This potent vitamin has been clinically proven to fade away hyperpigmentation, sun spots, and acne.

– Rosehip Seed Oil: Naturally rich in Vitamins C & A, these essential fatty acids work quickly to lock in skin’s moisture.

– Evening Primrose Oil: Provides light, non-oily moisture to the skin, never clogging or irritating the skin.

Hottest Make-Up Trends for Spring/Summer 2016

We love runways! The glitz, the glam, the excitement, the everything. I’ve been working as a stylist for many years now and I still get chills whenever I go backstage with my models or when I style any of my celebrity clients (you’ve got to look good when you are in sitting in the first row). And, runways are the start of all new trends we later adore, which is an additional reason absolutely love ‘em.

Another interesting aspect of runway shows is that, while clothes are the focus of every catwalk, we can also spot the ever-evolving makeup changes presented on the runway as part of the collection. Most designers say they rarely think about makeup as a separate things to the clothes, but rather tend to make it an accessory to it in order to make the whole look be cohesive, aesthetically appealing, and to the point. Still, us who are on the other side, tend to single out things about the whole presentation and then play it up in ways they are most fitting for us.

It’s wonderful that the makeup palette is seemingly broader than ever, so there is so much for everyone! I am singling out some of my favorite makeup trends for the upcoming spring and summer and I hope you’ll love them as much as I am loving them. Enjoy!

Color me blue

Blue is currently trending and it’s not going anywhere in 2016 either. Although, this time around things are getting a bit bandit-like; Chanel introduced the look. It’s perfect for both a daytime look, with a hint of blue eyeshadow, and a nighttime look, with a blue smoky eye.

Doll-like vibes

For all the girls who are channeling their inner Lolita, this makeup trend is everything! No, we are not talking red, heart-shaped lips… things are more subtle this time around. This Lolita is a free-spirited doll who decided to go bohemian on her style. The exaggerated lash look was first introduced by Louis Vuitton and it was well received. If you are daring, this is the look for your spring.

With contouring being the absolute hit in 2015 (thank you Kim K!), and multiple sister-techniques emerging I am absolutely positive 2016 is going to be major when it comes to this makeup trend. Contouring, strobing, tontouring… you name it – they are all going to make your face look slimmer and your nose more defined. Although the techniques do take a lot of time, the results are simply amazing.

Femininity re-born

Plenty designers have turned to more feminine vibes by channeling the simplicity of hairstyles, colors and makeup techniques. Marchesa, DKNY, Oscar de la Renta, Zac Posen, Carolina Herera… they are all relying on the rich texture of reds, pinks and purples on the lips while staying faithful to the simplicity of eye makeup for contrast. A little bit of liquid liner on the eyes or a hint of glitter are what’s going to be our major love in the summer of 2016.

During sleep, the cortisol, or stress hormone, of the body decreases, which is a good thing because it’s associated with weight gain, skin discoloration, and thinning skin. On the other hand, the melatonin hormone is increased, which not only makes you sleepy so you can recharge, but fights wrinkles and age spots.

The best way to ensure these hormones work effectively is to get enough sleep every night. Follow a relaxing routine before bedtime, such as by having a warm bath or drinking herbal tea, so that you train your body to establish a daily sleep routine.

Nine Hair Products With a Cult Following

Most women have drawers and shelves of make-up, hair, and beauty products, and yet, we only use a certain few of those we absolutely love. Those particular products are often our cult classics; ones we would like to bring with on a desert island. Here are nine hair products with a huge cult following, and are known for being tried and true.

L’oreal Elnett hairspray is one of my go-to products, along with Victoria’s Secret Ultimate Hairspray (possibly because it smells so divine). Both have amazing hold, which is perfect for my super fine hair, and none of that crunchy-stiffness.

Moroccan Oil is one of my go-to products for, basically, everything. It works great as a leave-in conditioner, as well as to smooth split ends anytime your hair looks a little dry. As a bonus, you can even use it on your skin to give you a glowing sheen.

This Is What a Cult Following Looks Like

The Kérastase Paris Beautifying Oil is equally amazing, and can be used on skin, as well.

The Mason Pearson brush has a high price tag, but if you read the many glowing reviews, you’ll easily see why.

Beauty: The Best Lip Products You’ll Ever Try

Undoubtedly, I am a product junkie and then some. Unfortunately, I’m a sucker for good packaging so I’ve tried many products, some of which are hits, and some of which are misses. However, after years of trying everything from stains to liners to plumpers, I’ve finally lowered down my favorites! They’re universally flattering and long-lasting.

Best Multitasker: Josie Maran Argan Oil Color Stick

Since I came across the Color Stick, I fell in love instantly with the colors and the lasting hydration it gave. If I were on a desert island and I could only have one make-up product, this would be it, hands down. The color is subtle, yet lasting, and you can use it on your cheeks for a beautiful glow. I keep one in my makeup bag, and in my purse for those times when I need to apply some make-up in a rush. The coral is my favorite, and it’s a universally flattering shade.

Best Lip Balm: Bliss Fabulips Softening Lip Balm

This lip balm is my favorite, as it feels lightweight and smooth going on. It hydrates and softens, without leaving that greasy residue many lip balms add. And if your lips are flaky, Bliss’ Fabulips line of lip cleansers and exfoliators also work like magic!

Best Lipstick: Giorgio Armani Rouge Ecstasy Lipstick

This stuff looks amazing, and have a billion or so different flattering shades. My favorite part: It’s one of the longest-lasting lipsticks I’ve ever used.

Giorgio Armani Smooth Silk Lip Pencil, $30

Similarly to the Giorgio Armani lipstick, this stuff lasts forever, and looks absolutely amazing. I use it religiously, and the pencils last forever!

Best Lip Gloss: NARS Lip Gloss

NARS Larger Than Life Lip Gloss, $26

I use the 3rd one in from the left, called Cantaloupe. I love how shiny it is, and the color stays true (and blends gorgeously over the Josie Maran Color Stick). It’s infused with nourishing ingredients that fight free-radicals and enhance your lips. Bonus: The applicator works as a lip brush for precise touch-ups.
